Shared Sessions Pt.2: in-depth look at a string recording session

In our recent video on the Shared Sessions initiative, we saw how BCMM, the Dutch professional association of media composers, offered 16 of their members the chance to record with a large string ensemble. In this second video, PK is a fly on the wall during some of the sessions, capturing the communication between composers and ensemble. We also spoke with participating composers, musicians, an orchestrator and the session director about the need for detailed preparation, the various ways of communicating during the session (with music notation and verbally) and enquired what it takes to be a session musician. Lastly, an A-B comparison between the programmed mock-up and the recording by the ensemble reveals the added value of real musicians.
