Anatomy of a Cue #11: Fons Beijer - Full Moon
In this episode of Anatomy of a Cue, Fons Beijer shows the layered approach he used for the opening scene of the Dutch feature film Full Moon, set in Thailand. Working with a hybrid of Thai instruments and orchestral sounds, recorded in Thailand and The Netherlands, he shows how he introduces the main elements in his score, blends the various layers of instrumentation, and foreshadows the darker turn the story will eventually take.
Fons Beijer - Composer for Film & Television
Fons Beijer is a Dutch film composer whose musical journey began early with classical piano lessons. While growing up immersed in classical music, he started composing his own pieces during high school. At age sixteen, Fons discovered his passion for film music—a moment that sparked a lifelong dedication to writing music for the screen.
In 2017, he enrolled in the Composition for the Media program at HKU (Utrecht University of the Arts). During his studies, Fons interned with composer Vidjay Beerepoot in Los Angeles, contributing to international projects such as The Club of Ugly Children and Ainbo: Spirit of the Amazon. This collaboration laid the foundation for an ongoing working relationship.
In his final year at HKU, Fons composed the score for the 10-part television series De Slet van 6 VWO (Stepping Stone, AVROTROS & NPO3), which earned him a nomination for the Buma Music in Motion New Talent Award. He graduated cum laude in 2021 and was subsequently accepted into the master's program in Composing for Film at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he worked closely with the Netherlands Film Academy. Over the course of the program, he scored a range of fiction films, documentaries, animations, and commercials, completing his degree in 2023.
Since then, Fons has continued his collaboration with Vidjay Beerepoot, working on projects such as Panda Bear in Africa, and animated series including SuperKitties, Kindergarten: The Musical, and Minnie’s Bow-Toons.
In 2025, Fons composed the score for his first feature film, Full Moon, a Dutch thriller set entirely in Thailand. To bring authenticity to the soundtrack, he travelled to Bangkok to record the score with local musicians and traditional Thai instruments, blending Southeast Asian textures with cinematic storytelling.
Fons is currently working on several new and exciting projects.
Composing media music is about making things. In the Anatomy of a Cue series, composers show how they do it. Focusing on just one piece (the cue) these in-depth videos dissect the music in detail: what's in there? Where did it come from? What was the creative process like - and what's that weird sound in the background?
